Día De Los Muertos, Birthday Party

This year, my sister, Brittany, and I did a co-birthday party for my son, Landen and my niece, Janessah. We invited close family members and decorated the backyard with “Dia De Los Muertos,” decorations. Britt and I wanted the birthday stars to enjoy their day by celebrating it with loved ones, cake and fun. We chose to do a co-birthday for several reasons. By knocking two parties out within one would work better for Covid-19 reasons, it was convenient for family members to make one trip, opposed to two, budget friendly played a role, and for the simple fact that the kids would have fun either way-sharing their party with their cousin or not.

The party was kind of a last minute thing. We weren’t sure if we were going to have a party or not, as the last chance to throw a party neared us, we decided to go ahead and go through with it. For being a last minute party, it turned out really cute.

We bought majority of our items from the Dollar Store; I will say that the Dollar Store has come up!!! I found several items that I consider to be “steals!!” I bought a blow up, “Happy Birthday,” balloon, streamers, party favors, and a few cut outs that fit perfectly into our theme. What we didn’t purchase from the Dollar Store, we found on Amazon, (prime, overnight) 99 Cent City, Hobby Lobby, Home Depot, and Save Mart. I know, it seems like a lot of running around….but because I had my sister’s help and we threw this party together, it really wasn’t bad at all. I ordered a backdrop cloth and two different banners from Amazon; all three things that I didn’t have to leave the house for. From Hobby Lobby, I found a banner, and from Home Depot, I bought two Marigold plants, one per eating table as a center piece. From Save Mart, Britt found theme related paper plates and napkins. She also found some great finds at 99 Cent City!! There she found cute little Day of the Dead solar bobble heads, some cut outs that really brought the party together, and regular latex balloons for our balloon garland.

With the cut outs that Britt found, I glued them onto wooden dowel sticks and also glued them onto the last minute piñata that we found. The piñata was a Little Mermaid one, so I simply hot glued a Day of the Dead cut out over the Little Mermaid picture and completely changed it! With the wooden dowels, I stuck them throughout the the plants that I bought from Home Depot. Aside from the banners, the backdrop cloth, and the center pieces, we made a balloon garland, used black and red tablecloths, and of course had a mini dessert table.

I made my son’s birthday cake the night prior; I usually buy his birthday cakes, but like I said, this was totally last minute and I had next to no little time to order a cake. My sister bought my niece, Janessah’s cake from Save Mart, which was already pre-made and ready to buy without a cake order needed, (The Jack Skeleton face) but still super cute!

We had a couple of games planned out for the day, your to go to games- musical chairs and instead of pin the tail on the donkey, we were going to do pin the heart on the skeleton, but with the kiddos (cousins) just hanging out and catching up, we didn’t bother on interrupting their good time! We did do the Piñata though, and the little kids all loved that!

At the end of the day, the party was a success and turned out more fun and cute than we had anticipated!

As always stay pretty!

Notice the Piñata with the glued on cut out?!?!?

Great turn out: believe it or not, majority of these kiddos are cousins!!!
