Porch “Welcome” Sign

I ran across these adorable black wooden signs at Target and naturally a creative idea occurred to me! I had some scraps left over from my backyard’s wooden wall that my husband and I made a couple of weeks ago. With the left over wood, I made this sign that I have been wanting to make and get up on my front porch. I bought the “Welcome” sign from Target in the Bulls Eye shopping area for $5.00.

From Target

After taking measurements and deciding on how big I wanted the sign to be, I used my Miter Saw to cut 5 even pickets. I wanted a bit of a pattern, so I decided to use one thick, one thin and so on.

After getting my even cut pickets, I used 2 wooden paint stir sticks, doubling up on them, I used them as my gap between the pickets. Once I laid them out the way I wanted them with the gaps in place, I used 2 more wooden pieces the hold all of the pickets in place.

Once I had my wooden pickets all in place and nailed them together, using my nail gun, I lightly sanded them down with a 320 grit and then I stained them. I favor the color I get when using Varathane Classic Golden Pecan with HINT of Early American; when I say, “hint,” I literally mean a mine a hint of color. I dip my paint brush into the Early American and then splash my same paint brush into a separate cup of Golden Pecan, making it majority Golden Pecan and a smidge of the Early American. After staining and waiting for it to dry, I sealed it with a clear coat of Varathane Ultimate Sparurethane Clear Satin, this will help it prevent weathering and keep it looking nice and shiny.

Now for my finishing touches, on the back of the welcome sign, there are two holes where you can hang it. I drilled two screws into the wooden sign and matched those screws up to the holes and hung the welcome onto the wooden sign. If you wish, you can secure it more by using wood glue as well. I made my screws pretty tight onto the wooden sign where my welcome sign isn’t going anywhere. Then on the back of my homemade wooden sign, I used two picture hanging brackets.

ALL DONE!!! It was that easy! A pretty to the T, welcome sign!!! Hope you love it as much as I do.
