Playroom Shelf (DIY)

This week, I worked on making a nice shelf for our playroom, among a couple of other projects. I recently made another shelf for the playroom, but I honestly just wasn’t in love with it, so it had to be replaced. As I was rearranging my eldest sons room, after throwing up some super cool blueprints of Star Wars wall paper, I decided to put a smaller, white shelf in his room to better fit into the new fresh and bright ambiance that is now thriving within his four walls. By doing so, I was left with two cubed shelves that used to be in his room. I’ve literally moved these cubed shelves back and forth between several areas within our home. I thought it was time to do away them, untilllll…….. I remembered that I wanted a new shelf in the playroom. I figured I would dismantle the two shelves and attempt to recreate, and if I messed, well…… I was going to throw them away anyways.

Firstly, I took the two shelves completely apart. I already had an idea on how and what I wanted. I actually have been searching the web for the particular shelf that I wanted for a while now, and just had no luck. I wanted a long shelf with three shelves, high enough for all of the containers that I use for toys, but low enough to fit under the mid line boarder that I have in the center of my walls that wrap the room. Using a measuring tape, I measured out how high I wanted each shelf to be. Then I designed the shelf the way that I wanted, working with what wood I had. I drilled holes into the center piece of wood and used wooden dowels to connect the shelves together. I also drilled holes into all of the new areas where I wanted my new existing shelves to set. After drilling all of my holes, I started screwing all of my pieces together. I bought a wooden sheet from Home Depot, (roughly $8-9.00) cut it down to fit my shelf using a table saw, and then nailed it to the back of my new shelf to help hold it all together.

Notice the burlap on top, I was debating on boxing in burlap for the sides but decided to just stick to the wallpaper. I figured that wallpaper would be easier to clean little fingerprints up 🙂

At this point, I am loving the shelf so far. I used wood filler to putty up all of the old holes. Now that I have a smooth surface, I wallpapered it all up using a textured print that I favored for this shelf from Lowe’s. (I purchased two rolls, each roll costing about $50.00) I had my heart set on purchasing cane web for the sides, but opted out when I found this wallpaper. I do plan on doing a DIY project soon with some cane webbing though!!!! After wallpapering the shelf, I used a cute trim and bordered it all up any and everywhere necessary. Once I put my trim on, I used wood filler for any other cracks and nail holes, sanded it down for a smooth surface and then painted it!!! I forgot to mention that I purchased four legs from Home Depot; these legs are perfect in height!!! I love how I can fit more baskets under the original shelf. Also, just to throw it out there, the picture above the shelf, I also made and painted!!! YEP, all on my own.

STAY PRETTY TO THE T, all while being as creative as possible!!!!

This shelf looks ADORABLE in this room; I love the way it turned out, couldn’t be happier!!

Notice how tall the legs are? They are perfect to fit a few baskets of toys down below.
